About St. Xavier's
St. Xavier's Institution is a well-known boys' school in George Town, Penang. SXI is named after Saint Francis Xavier, the pioneering missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit Order). The Saint Francis Free School was started in 1816 by the French Catholic Priests. When Free School was opened in 1816, the Catholic Priests realised that there was a need for Catholic schools. So on April 20, 1825, the De La Salle Brothers and Infant Jesus Sisters arrived in Penang to take over the schools started by the Priests. In 1852, the school was relocated to its present site and renamed as St. Xavier's Institution.
In 1941, the school was damaged by Japanese bombs and it became the Naval Headquarters during the Japanese Occupation. The school was again bombed, at the end of Second World War, this time by American planes. This made the school unsafe. From 1945 to 1953, St. Xavier's Institution was temporarily housed on the school field. This was called The Attap Sheds Period. In 1954, the present St. Xavier's Institution was completed and students moved in that year. The building was considered a very modern design in 1954. Unfortunately, at present, the school is short of physical space to meet the demands of current educational needs. Certain parts of the school have deteriorated due to wear and tear. So, the school needs to double its efforts to repair and replace facilities for the welfare of present Xavierians.
We hope that parents, Old Xaverians and the public will continue to support the school through various fund raising projects.

You are constantly being studied by the young people in your care. This is why you are obliged to set a good example. |
 |
You teach them more by your actions than by your words. |
 |
Do you try to teach them anything that you do not practise yourself? |
